6 May 2015, The Conversation, UN climate chief: other countries are ‘further ahead than Australia’:As the world heads towards the pivotal United Nations climate summit in Paris in December, this was a gentle but pointed signal from Figueres, the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Her message was that Australia will be expected to put an ambitious offer on the table to tackle climate change. 6 May 2015, RTCC: Fossil fuels just pushed CO2 levels to a 3 million-year high: Global concentrations of greenhouse gases surpass “significant milestone”, US climate science agency says, the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere exceeded 400 parts per million in March, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported today. That’s the most in 57 years of measurements, a near 50% rise on pre-industrial levels, and probably the highest since the Pliocene Epoch, 2.6-5.3 million years ago. 5 May 2015, ACF Report: Subsidising Big Coal: Handouts to Australia’s biggest coal mining companies through the Fuel Tax Credits Scheme. The Government hands out around $6 billion dollars in fuel tax subsidies every year to a wide range of industries through the Fuel Tax Credits Scheme. Despite only making 1 per cent of claims, the mining industry received 40 per cent of the total amount of fuel tax credits claimed in 2012-13. The biggest average claims in the mining industry are made by the coal miners. This report makes a preliminary estimate of the amount of fuel tax credits claimed by the biggest coal mining companies in Australia. Read More here
